FAQ

1. How old must my child be to start at Abhinaya Kuchipudi Dance Academy?

We recommend that students begin learning this classical art form at a minimum age of 5. By this age, children typically have the focus, attention span, ability to follow directions, basic reading and writing skills, and the coordination and body awareness necessary for effective learning.

2. Do you offer a trial class

We do not provide trial classes, as classical dance cannot be accurately evaluated in just one session. However, you are welcome to visit our studio and observe a class to help gauge your interest. We encourage serious learners to participate in classes for at least three months and/or one annual recital to gain a better understanding of our training style and the expectations for their Kuchipudi journey.

3. When can a student begin performing

Although Kuchipudi is a performing art, the early stages of learning concentrate on technique and movement. Every student will have the chance to perform in our annual recital held in November. As students progress to the intermediate and advanced levels, there is a stronger focus on presentation and style, along with ample opportunities to showcase their skills at community

4. What are the class fees

Detailed class fees will be provided upon completion of the registration process.

5. If I miss a class, do you offer a make-up class

During our regular Fall and Spring sessions, make-up classes are allowed within one month of a missed class, provided there is an available parallel class at the same level. Make-up classes can be taken if a student misses a scheduled class or if there is an unexpected closure due to weather or power issues. However, we do not offer make-up classes for scheduled breaks such as Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Year’s. Additionally, tuition will not be prorated if you are unable to make up for your missed classes. Please note that summer classes may not have parallel classes available for make-up lessons, and any absence during this period will be non-refundable.

6. Is there a dress code for class

Students below age 13 should wear a white frock (umbrella cut preferred) with white /red salwar/tights and a red chunni/dupatta to the class and tie it around the waist. Students above 13 should wear a saree tied above ankles and below knees. You can purchase a pre-stitched practice saree as well. Hair must be secured in a ponytail or braid and kept pinned away from the face.

* Always wear pajamas that are flexible enough to do sit-ups. Tights/stretch pants are also allowed.

* Marking a bindi on your forehead is highly recommended so that the expression on the face gets enhanced.

* Always tie your hair or pin it down so that it does not fall on your face.

* A sleeveless blouse is fine, but no spaghetti straps, please.

7. Am I too ‘old’ to start learning Kuchipudi?

Kuchipudi is accessible to anyone aged 5 and older, including teenagers, adults, and seniors. Contrary to popular belief, learning to dance is not exclusive to children. While middle-aged and older adults may face challenges in terms of physical, musical, and artistic skills, mastering Kuchipudi is definitely achievable with the right amount of dedication and effort. In fact, more than 20% of our students are adults, and we often see them demonstrating exceptional commitment and enthusiasm in their learning journey.

8. I have learned/am learning another form of classical Indian dance. Is it still possible to learn Kuchipudi

Absolutely! Having experience in any classical Indian dance form does not impede your ability to learn Kuchipudi. All classical dance styles have their origins in the Natya Shastra. While certain concepts may feel familiar because of your background, others might require some time to adjust to. You could find that you learn quickly and advance through the syllabus at a faster pace.

9. Who will be teaching the class?

Classes are taught by our Director, Kalyani Avula, as well as our senior students. These senior students, who have over 7 to 10 years of experience in Kuchipudi, lead our lower-level classes as part of their training. The student-teachers are supervised by our Director, who teaches items Level and above. Additionally, student-teachers assist in classes with more than 15 enrolled students to ensure effective instruction.

10. I have been learning/have learned Kuchipudi in the past. How would I be placed into a particular class level

We encourage you to come in and meet with us to showcase any skills or knowledge you may remember. Based on our assessment, we will recommend an appropriate class level for you to join. If you have completed any exams with institutions in India or the USA, we can help determine the equivalent level

11. How long does it take to complete learning Kuchipudi

Please remember that learning Indian classical dance is a lifelong journey! However, you can enroll in the certification course at our affiliated university, which is a four-year program. Each year of the program typically takes 2 to 3 years to complete.

12. With which institution are you affiliated for certification

We are affiliated with Padmavathi Viswavidyalayam in Tirupati, India, which conducts annual written and practical exams in September/October with an external examiner.

13. I am traveling for an extended duration in the Winter or Summer break. Do you prorate tuition for these missed classes

Tuition must be paid within the first two weeks of each quarter (August-October, November-February, March-May). We do not offer prorated tuition for absences due to travel during these times. You are welcome to make up any missed classes when you return. Please note that, as per our school policy, students who take a break from scheduled classes will be treated as new enrollments.
